If you are traveling to Dubai as a gay couple, discretion is key. Public displays of affection are generally taboo in the United Arab Emirates, regardless of sexual orientation. Especially as a homosexual couple, you should be careful not to walk hand in hand in public or exchange other displays of affection. Dubai is a modern metropolis, but the country still has strict laws against homosexuality. Even if you do not face the death penalty, as in other parts of the country, you may well be imprisoned or deported if you break the rules.
If you want to be on the safe side, you should always choose rooms with two single beds when booking a hotel as a couple to avoid any suspicion and prevent unpleasant situations. However, the hotels we recommend are currently considered gay-friendly and tolerate two men in a room with a double bed. You don’t need to be afraid that the Sharia police will be sent to your room. BUT: Even though many hotels in Dubai are increasingly gay-friendly, it is advisable not to explicitly present yourself as a homosexual couple when booking or checking in.
Although the laws regarding homosexuality in this country are very different from our views, we have to realize that by crossing the border we are guests in the country and therefore have to temporarily accept the rules of the United Arab Emirates. So keep a low profile and be respectful of local customs to avoid any trouble.
